We haven’t taken a long trip to Mexico since before the pandemic (our weekend trip to Baja California Norte for our daughter’s wedding doesn’t count). So when Vince suggested that we travel to Mexico where he could continue to work remotely during the week, and we could take excursions to surrounding locations on the weekends, I quickly agreed.
The next question was where to go in Mexico. Vince needed to be somewhere close to an airport in case he had to make a quick return for an in-person meeting at work. We finally decided to fly to Mexico City and spend a weekend there before traveling one and half hours south to Cuernavaca where we rented an AirBnb apartment for a month. The rest of the trip would be determined later. We bought one-way tickets to Mexico City (that made me nervous), and we were set. We were going to Mexico!
There was quite a bit of preparation involved for this trip because we were planning to stay longer than usual, maybe even two or three months if everything worked out. Vince spent a lot of time making our home safe and secure, and I made packing lists, cleaned the house and fridge, and arranged for a friend to take care of some plants and a neighbor to look after our place while we were gone. We are lucky to have good friends and neighbors who look out for each other. We knew we were leaving everything in capable hands.
There was some additional planning for COVID protection. We purchased new masks and Vince’s cousin gave us some extra protective N95s to use on the plane. We also purchased a supply of in-home COVID tests in case we needed to check for infection while we were in Mexico. We both are vaccinated, have received a booster shot, and feel fairly protected. But we wanted to stay as safe as possible given the surge of the new Omicron variant. Fortunately, a COVID test is not required before flying to Mexico so we were able to skip that.

I admire the fact that you and Vince are living your dream. Mexico has so much to offer in terms of culture. I always feel so alive when I am there.
Hi Eileen! I love your blog. Your trip is sounding so exciting. Can’t wait to hear more of what’s going on! I hope you got to go to Buena Vista Del Monte for the day. It was such a wonderful experience for me. It was like going back in time a 100 years. Dirt floors with the chickens running in and out of the houses. It was so green there and there were no cement streets just dirt. As the years passed there were streets put in but the the water would gush down the streets. My friend that I used to stay with passed away so it will be hard for me to stay there again since there weren…
